Writes the guides on Furniture Deals: sizes checked against the listings, prices and ratings read from Amazon India.
Sheesham (Indian rosewood, Dalbergia sissoo) is the wood most Indian solid-wood beds are made of, and for good reasons: it is hard, heavy, straight-grained, resists termites better than most woods, and takes a stain well, which is why the same bed is sold in walnut, honey, teak and natural finishes. Below are the sheesham beds with the highest scores on this site today. The list is live: it changes as prices and ratings change.
How these were chosen
Every bed on the site gets a score out of 100 from four things: the Amazon buyer rating, how many buyers rated it, its price against other beds of its kind, and how complete the listing is (material, finish, size, measurements, photos). Nothing in it is paid for, and a bed with no Amazon rating has no score and cannot appear here. The beds below are the top sheesham beds by that score.
Weight. A solid sheesham queen bed weighs about 60 to 90 kg and a king 80 to 120 kg. A “sheesham” queen listed at 35 kg has sheesham legs on an engineered-wood base.
“Solid” in the material line, not “sheesham finish” or “sheesham colour”, which describe the stain on another wood.
Joints. Mortise and tenon, or bolts through the rails, hold; screws into end grain loosen.
Slats. A sheesham bed with plywood slats is normal and fine; the slats carry the mattress, the frame carries the slats.
Finish. Walnut is the darkest and hides marks; honey and natural show the grain and the marks; teak finish is the most common. All are the same wood underneath.
Termite treatment stated in the listing. Sheesham resists termites, it does not defeat them.
Looking after it
Wipe with a dry cloth; wax or oil once a year; keep it away from a wall that gets damp in the monsoon; tighten the bolts after the first month and then yearly. A sheesham bed looked after this way lasts decades.
