Table with Drawers: Bedside, Study, Console and Dressing Tables Compared

The drawers themselves

• Runners. Metal ball-bearing runners open smoothly for years. Wooden runners (drawer sliding on a wooden rail) are traditional, cheaper, and stick in humid months. The photos show which; a visible metal rail at the drawer side is the good kind.
• Depth. 3 to 4 inches inside for a bedside or console drawer; 5 to 6 for files in a study table.
• Stops. A drawer should stop before it falls out. Cheap tables leave this out.
• Dovetail or screwed corners. Dovetails (interlocking fingers at the drawer corners) last; stapled corners do not.

What to check in the listing

The height first, against where it stands; then the weight (solid sheesham bedside table 8 to 15 kg, study table 25 to 35 kg, console 15 to 25 kg); then whether the drawer interior is finished, because raw particle board inside a drawer sheds dust onto what you keep in it.
