There are four decisions in a wooden bed, and they go in this order: the size (the room decides it), the wood (how long it should last), storage (what else the room has to hold), and only then the design. 3. Storage

Hydraulic lift (the whole base opens, needs no floor beside it), box (lift the mattress, cheapest), or drawers (daily use, needs 24 inches clear on the drawer side). A bed without storage is lighter, cheaper and cooler underneath; in a room with a wardrobe and a chest it is the better bed. The three storage types compared.

4. Design

• Headboard height: 36 to 48 inches from the floor. Check it clears the window sill and the switchboard.
• Platform or slats: slats let a mattress breathe; a solid platform needs a mattress rated for it.
• Finish: walnut hides marks, honey and natural show the grain, teak finish is the common middle. All are stains on the same wood.
• Legs or a base to the floor: legs make cleaning under it possible and the room feel larger.
