Writes the guides on Furniture Deals: sizes checked against the listings, prices and ratings read from Amazon India.
A wooden bookshelf has to do one thing a display shelf does not: carry weight without bowing. A shelf of paperbacks weighs about 10 kg a foot; hardbacks 15. So the two numbers to read are shelf depth (10 to 12 inches for books, 8 for paperbacks only) and shelf span, the distance between uprights, which decides whether the shelf sags.

Sizes of bookshelf
Short, 30 to 36 inches high: two shelves, sits under a window or beside a desk.
Standard, 60 to 72 inches: four or five shelves, 24 to 36 inches wide, the common wooden bookcase.
Tall, 78 to 84 inches: six shelves, must be fixed to the wall; a tall case with books in the top shelves tips.
Wall-mounted: 24 to 48 inches wide, one or two shelves, for a room with no floor to spare; the wall plugs carry the load.
Open or closed
Open shelves show the books and gather dust; a glass or wooden door keeps the dust off and hides the mess. In a city with heavy dust, a door pays for itself in cleaning. Ladder and tree shelves are display pieces: fine for twenty books, not for a hundred.
