A puja unit in a modern flat has to do what a whole pooja room did: hold the idols at the right height, keep the lamp safe, store the samagri, and fit in a corner. The designs sold on Amazon India come in three kinds, and the flat decides which.

Sizes that work

• Idol shelf height: the idols’ feet at about chest height when standing (45 to 50 inches from the floor), or at eye level when seated on a chowki if the family sits for pooja.
• Shelf depth: 10 to 12 inches, so a 6-inch idol stands with a lamp in front and nothing hangs over the edge.
• Clearance above the lamp: 12 inches at least, and no cloth or wood directly over the flame.
• Storage: a drawer for agarbatti, matches and cotton; a cupboard below for the brass.

Placement

Vastu tradition places the puja unit in the north-east corner of the home, facing east or west so the person praying faces east, and keeps it out of the bedroom and away from the bathroom wall. Whether or not you follow vastu, two practical rules hold: put it where a lit lamp is safe from curtains and from children, and where there is a socket if the unit has lights.

Designs and materials

• Sheesham or teak carved mandirs: heavy (a floor unit is 40 to 80 kg), last a lifetime, the carving holds kumkum and needs a brush to clean.
• Engineered wood with laminate: light, the common choice for wall-mounted units, wipes clean; keep the lamp on a brass or marble plate, not the laminate.
• Marble top on a wooden unit: the best surface under a lamp and for abhishek, adds weight.
• Doors: keep dust and the cat off the idols; glass doors show them.
• Lights: an LED strip inside the top, warm white, on a switch.
