Solid Wood vs Plywood vs Engineered Wood Furniture: How to Tell from an Amazon Listing

“Wooden” on Amazon can mean solid sheesham, plywood with a veneer, or particle board with a printed laminate, and the photos look alike. The listing tells you which, if you know where to look. Four checks, in order of reliability:

1. The weight

The most reliable line in any furniture listing, because it cannot be dressed up. Solid hardwood is dense; engineered wood is not.

PieceSolid sheesham or teakPlywoodParticle board or MDF
Queen bed60 to 90 kg40 to 55 kg30 to 45 kg
King bed80 to 120 kg50 to 70 kg40 to 60 kg
3-door wardrobe90 to 150 kg60 to 80 kg45 to 70 kg
Bedside table8 to 15 kg5 to 9 kg4 to 8 kg

A listing with no weight at all is a listing hiding something; the FD Score’s listing-detail ring marks it down.

2. The material line

  • Solid: “solid sheesham wood”, “solid teak”, “solid mango wood”, “solid acacia”. The word “solid” and a species name.
  • Not solid: “sheesham finish”, “walnut colour”, “wooden”, “wood”, “engineered wood”, “MDF”, “particle board”, “pre-laminated”, “HDHMR”. A finish or colour named after a wood is a stain on something else.
  • Plywood: “plywood”, “BWP ply”, “marine ply”, “commercial ply”, sometimes “sheesham veneer”. Stronger than particle board, weaker than solid wood, and fine for the base of a bed under solid rails.

3. The price

Solid sheesham has a floor price set by the wood: a queen bed from about ₹15,000, a 3-door wardrobe from about ₹20,000. Below those, whatever the title says, it is not solid throughout. Above them, it may still not be; go back to the weight.

4. The photos

Look at an edge or a leg. Solid wood shows end grain, with the figure running through the thickness. Laminate shows a printed pattern that stops at the edge, often with a visible seam or a lighter core. A veneer on plywood shows thin layers at a cut edge.
