Some Indian makers also sell a 6 × 6 feet king (72 × 72 inches), which the listing usually calls “King 6×6” or “72×72”. Check the listing before you buy a mattress: a 78-inch mattress will not fit a 72-inch frame.

A king is 12 inches (30 cm) wider than a queen, so each sleeper gets 36 inches, the width of a single bed. That extra foot is the whole reason to buy a king. If the room cannot give it, a queen is the better bed.

How big a room a king size bed needs

Allow at least 24 inches (60 cm) of walking space on the two long sides and at the foot, more if a wardrobe door opens into that space. With the frame taking about 6.5 × 7 feet, that gives:

• Minimum room: 10.5 × 11 feet, with the bed against the wall on one side and nothing else in the room.
• Comfortable room: 12 × 12 feet, with space for two bedside tables and a wardrobe.
• Below 10 × 10 feet: buy a queen. A king in a small room leaves no path round it.

What a king size bed with storage adds

Storage does not change the mattress size, but it changes the height and the clearance you need. A hydraulic lift bed opens the whole base upward, so the mattress top sits about 22 to 26 inches high and you need nothing beside it. A box bed with a lid is the same.
