Rajasthani furniture means solid wood, mostly sheesham (Indian rosewood) and some mango and acacia, made in the workshops of Jaipur and Jodhpur, the two cities that make a large share of the wooden furniture sold across India and exported from it. If you have bought a sheesham bed, wardrobe or dining set on Amazon India, there is a fair chance it was made within a hundred kilometres of this site, which is published from Jaipur.
What makes furniture Rajasthani
The wood. Sheesham first, for its hardness and dark streaked grain; mango wood for carved and painted pieces; acacia (babool) for cheaper solid pieces; teak only in the top end.
Hand joinery. Mortise and tenon joints, wooden pegs, and frames that bolt together rather than screw into board. It is why a Jodhpur bed weighs 80 kg and comes apart for the stairs.
Finishes. Walnut, honey, teak and natural stains on the plain pieces; distressed paint, brass sheet and iron strapping on the traditional ones.
Carving. Jali (lattice) panels, floral borders and turned legs on the traditional range; the modern range from the same workshops is plain and square-edged.

Buying Rajasthani wooden furniture online
Twenty years ago you bought it from a showroom on Jaipur’s Jhotwara Road or Jodhpur’s Pal Road. Today most of those workshops sell on Amazon India through their own brand or a trading company, and the same bed that stands in a Jaipur showroom is a listing with a delivery date. What changes is that you cannot knock on it, so the listing has to tell you what the showroom would.
How to tell real Rajasthani solid wood in a listing
Weight. A sheesham queen bed is 60 to 90 kg, a 3-door wardrobe 90 to 150 kg, a 6-seater dining set 90 to 130 kg. A listing well under those numbers is engineered wood with a sheesham-coloured laminate, whatever the title says.
“Solid sheesham” in the material line, not “sheesham finish”.
End grain in the photos: streaks running through the thickness of a leg, not a printed pattern that stops at the edge.
Assembly: real Rajasthani furniture arrives in a few heavy parts that bolt together, often with a carpenter visit in the listing.
The seller’s location on the Amazon seller page: Jaipur, Jodhpur, or a Rajasthan town is a good sign; a Delhi or Mumbai trader may still be selling Rajasthani work, but ask.
Because the furniture is made here and sold direct, Rajasthani sheesham is the cheapest solid wood in India: a plain queen bed from about ₹15,000, a 3-door wardrobe from about ₹20,000, a 6-seater dining set from about ₹25,000. Carving, brass work and hydraulic storage add to that; teak doubles it. On this site today the sheesham beds run from ₹5,899 to ₹47,599 and the wardrobes from ₹16,899 to ₹32,199.

Looking after sheesham in a Rajasthan summer, and a Mumbai monsoon
Sheesham is made in a dry climate and moves a little when it reaches a humid one: a drawer may stick in July and free itself in October. Keep it a hand’s width off an outside wall, oil or wax it once a year, tighten the bolts after the first month, and keep water off the top. Treated this way it outlasts the house.
